About the Society

Every great story has someone standing just off to the side. We give them the pen. Black Seal Society was built on that belief.

Each season, we take a work of public domain literature and retell it from a perspective that was always present but never given a voice. The result is a complete twelve-month story — twenty-four letters, arriving twice a month, sealed in black wax, delivered by mail.

This is not content. It is correspondence. Something physical, keepable, and worth reading twice. Something you actually look forward to finding in your mailbox.

Black Seal Society is a physical mail subscription company. Each season, we deliver a complete story — told by a narrator from the margins of a classic work of literature — through twenty-four beautifully printed letters, arriving twice a month for twelve months. Every letter is sealed with our signature black wax seal and delivered directly to your mailbox.
Your subscription includes two printed letters per month for twelve consecutive months — twenty-four letters in total. Each letter is a chapter in a complete story, printed on quality paper, sealed in a cream or kraft envelope with a black wax seal, and mailed via standard US mail. Nothing else is included — no packaging filler, no extras. Just the letters. That is the point.
Twice a month. We mail on a consistent schedule so you know when to expect your next letter. The anticipation is part of the experience — most subscribers tell us the days their letters arrive have become something they genuinely look forward to.
We ship to US addresses only at this time. All subscriptions require a valid US mailing address. We hope to expand to additional regions in the future — if you are outside the US and would like to be notified when international shipping becomes available, please join our waitlist.
One season is twelve months — twenty-four letters in total. Each season is a complete story with a beginning, a middle, and a resolution. You do not need to have read the original source material to enjoy it, and you do not need to subscribe to any other season first. Each season stands entirely on its own.
A monthly subscription is billed at $13 per month and continues until you cancel. An annual subscription is billed as a single payment of $149 for the full twelve months — equivalent to just $12.42 per month, saving you roughly one month's cost compared to paying monthly. The annual subscription does not renew automatically. You will receive a reminder before it expires.
Bundles allow you to purchase multiple seasons at a discounted rate. A two-season bundle is $269 (saving $29 versus purchasing two annual subscriptions separately). A three-season bundle is $379 (saving $68). Bundle subscribers receive all seasons simultaneously — each story runs twelve months and begins when you do. Bundles are our founding member option — the best value and the deepest commitment to the Society.
Yes — and it makes an exceptional gift. Gift subscriptions are annual and priced at $149. At checkout you purchase the subscription; the recipient receives a gift notification and activates their subscription by providing their own mailing address. You do not need their address at the time of purchase. Gift subscriptions are non-refundable once activated.
You can update your mailing address at any time through your account. Address changes must be made before the first of the month in which your next letter is scheduled to mail. We are not able to redirect or recall letters that have already been sent to your previous address.
If your letter has not arrived within fourteen days of the expected mailing date, please contact us. We will replace a lost or damaged letter once per subscription year at no charge. We ask that you contact us within twenty-one days of the expected delivery date. Please note that we are not responsible for postal delays caused by the US Postal Service, weather, or other circumstances outside our control.
Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time through your account. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period or paid subscription term — meaning you will continue to receive all letters until your subscription expires. Monthly subscribers will not be charged for the next billing cycle. Annual subscribers will receive all remaining letters through the end of their paid twelve months. No letters already sent are refunded.
Once a letter has been mailed, it cannot be refunded. We do not issue refunds for letters already sent under any circumstances. If you cancel before any letter has been mailed, please contact us within 48 hours of purchase and we will issue a full refund. Billing errors and duplicate charges are always corrected immediately. No. Season One — Letters from the Edge of Wonderland — is written so that readers who know Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will enjoy the pleasure of recognition, and readers who have never read it will not feel lost. The story belongs entirely to Wren, our narrator. Alice is there. Wonderland is there. But this is Wren's story — and Wren's story is entirely its own.
